Why 10K?
Envía’s challenge is straightforward and simple – raise $5,000 to buy new tables and chairs for the feeding program in Nicoya, Costa Rica and two donors will match it by giving $5,000 ($2,500 each) towards food.
Background
Ultimately, we would like to establish a community center in Nicoya. The first step in reaching this community was to engage their immediate need: hunger.
We started our feeding program on March 9, 2011, with 70 children. Since then we have added several new children. In addition to feeding the children, we are also beginning to feed many of the mothers who come with their children. There are many tough situations in our midst. It is very difficult to deny a mother food, when she hasn’t eaten in 2 days. Overall, we end up feeding between 100-110 people every week.
We only have enough wooden benches and tables to sit 40 children at a time. Many of the benches and tables are old and falling apart. We would like to provide enough tables and chairs to seat at least 100 people at a time.
Beyond Feedings
Envía is committed to a comprehensive approach to dealing with the problems in the community. It goes beyond just their physical needs. As we expand our programs, the tables and chairs will also be used to serve the people of Nicoya through specialized workshops, entrepreneurial training, life seminars, education classes, and other programs of the like.
